Student Success and Wellness Plan Announced
Toronto City School District is pleased to announce its Student Success and Wellness Plan. The district is receiving $493,180 in funding which it will use to address the safety, physical health, and mental health needs of its students. The Student Success and Wellness funds will be used to provide access to:
• a full-time School Resource Officer who will improve school safety, deter aggressive behavior; and serve as a community liaison between the school district and other agencies serving the students of the district;
• a full-time cognitive therapist at the elementary school to provide intervention and treatment for childhood behavioral and emotional disorders as well as counseling for mental health issues.
• And continue to provide a full-time elementary school nurse to help students attain and maintain an optimal health status so that they may receive maximum benefit from their educational experiences;
The district has two community partners for this project: CHANGE, Inc. located in Newell, West Virginia and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department located in Steubenville, Ohio. The plan will service all students located at J.T. Karaffa Elementary School, Toronto Elementary School, and Toronto Jr.-Sr. High School. New staff is expected to be in place by January 2020. A special thanks to Board of Education members Karen Walker, Jay Foster, Randy Henry, George Dobbs, and Julie Ault for their assistance in developing the Student Success and Wellness Plan.
