District Profile

The Toronto City School District is located in Jefferson County and is situated on the banks of the Ohio River. The district contains two school buildings: Toronto Jr.-Sr. High School (grades 6-12) and Karaffa Elementary School (grades preK-5). The district serves the students in the city of Toronto and the surrounding area. Major employers in the community include Timet Titanium Metals Corporation and Valley Converting. The city’s population totals more than 5,000 residents.
 
Board Meetings: The Toronto Board of Education meets the third Thursday of the month at 5:00 p.m. at Karaffa Elementary School library.

Toronto Jr.-Sr. High School
Grades 6-12
Twenty percent of our high school students participate in the CCP program allowing them to enter a college or university of their choice several credits ahead of their peers.
Special Academic Programs
• College Credit Plus Classes are offered onsite with over 30 semester hours available in Math, English, Literature, Art and Spanish.
• Talented and Gifted students are serviced through accelerated classes, college credit plus courses, and a pull out program.
• Destination Imagination is an after-school program that inspire learners to utilize diverse approaches in applying 21st century skills and creativity.
Curriculum and Instruction
• The school offers a rigorous curriculum aligned to the state academic content standards.
• Our teachers are committed to learning and strengthening their teaching practice through implementing Universal Design for Learning techniques, utilizing Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS).
• The latest technology is utilized including interactive white boards, mobile computer carts, chrome books, iPads, Plato online courseware, iReady, and Google Classroom.
Extracurricular Opportunities
• Fine Arts: Students showcase their artistic and musical talents through participation in marching band, concert band, choir, musical, and art club.
• Athletics: Junior High and High School athletes compete in football, golf, volleyball, basketball, swimming, track and softball. The school bellows to the East Ohio Athletic Conference and the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference.

Karaffa Elementary School
Grades Pre-K – 5
Karaffa Elementary School was able to increase state tested math scores by 26.4 percent, reading scores by 9.2 percent, social studies scores by 14.3 percent and science scores by 1.8 percent from the 2015-2016 school year to the 2016-2017 school year. Discipline referrals decreased 25% from the prior school year. 
Special Academic Programs
• Talented and Gifted students receive services from a Gifted Intervention Specialist through accelerated classes and/or specially designed instruction in the regular classroom.
• Tutoring with the Lightning Squad is an online, team-based tutoring intervention in which first-third grade students practice their fluency, phonics, reading, spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension skills through interactive games.
• Destination Imagination (D.I.) gives students an opportunity to learn higher order thinking, explore their curiosity, build on their unique strengths, and learn the skills needed for the 21st century workforce.
Curriculum and Instruction
• Karaffa Elementary School uses the Success for All Reading program. SFA is a research-based reading program that incorporates the use of cooperative learning groups and interactive lessons which are fully aligned to the state standards and enhanced with multimedia.
• Each classroom is equipped with the latest technology including interactive whiteboards, computers, and chrome books. Students have weekly computer classes.
